Countdown to Havana World Music, The International Arts Festival That Showcases The New Era in Cuba

• The island’s most important music event will hold its 5th edition from 22nd to 24th March 2018, during the touristic peak season

• A blend of Rock, Hip-Hop, Jazz, Soul, Reggae, Salsa, Electronic, Funky and Folk take over LatinAmerica’s most throbbing alternative music festival

Havana, Cuba – 12th Feb, 2018 – Havana World Music  (HWM) will hold its 5th and most ambitious edition this year, with an eye on gaining international recognition as Latin America’s most important alternative music festival. The event was born in 2014 and, since then, 70 live acts from 20 different countries performing live have supported this project. Nobody wants to miss this vibrant multicultural gathering that embodies all the energy of an exciting new time in Cuba.

Havana World Music will celebrate its fifth anniversary from March 22nd to 24th. HWM provides a hint of the world’s most genuine music trends at the very heart of Havana’s lively leisure center. The main venue, located at the Metropolitan-Almendares Park in downtown Havana, hosts multiple open-air concerts over three days. Not  far away, workshops, conferences and exhibitions will take place at a public institution called The Cuban Art Factory.

Which live-acts have been locked so far?

The worldwide-acclaimed Hip-hop trio Orishas (Cuba) and also Marinah (Spain), Gato Preto (Germany), Henry Cole (Puerto Rico), The Chicken Brothers (United Kingdom), La Banda Morisca (Spain), Swing Original Monks (Ecuador), HaydéeMilanés (Cuba), Interactivo (Cuba) y Síntesis (Cuba).

In early spring, during the festival, the country scores its highest number of foreign visitors. The Cuban capital has resurged as an international musical destination. The unfreezing of the diplomatic relations with the United States and the massive concerts given by The Rolling Stones and Major Lazer shocked the world in March 2016. This turn of events had another huge landmark with Barack Obama’s historic visit to Cuba, the first one paid by a US president in almost a century.

Against a backdrop of many exhilarating political and social changes going on, HWM aims to incarnate the values of the Cuba of the 21st century’s: a country with an enormous cultural and human capital, open to the world and proud of its identity.

Limited resources, all heart

Most of the international live acts participating in Havana World Music either give away their talent or agree on getting testimonial fees. So they support this alternative event that melts various genres such as Rock, Hip-Hop, Jazz, Soul, Reggae, Salsa, Electronic beats, Funky or Folk.

The festival is the brainchild of a group of music lovers, led by the well-known Cuban songwriter Eme Alfonso. Several foreigners who live on the island form part of the management too. The event runs on a low-budget basis and receives support from the Cuban authorities. Locals can purchase the tickets on affordable prices: 20 cuban pesos a day, which equals less than a US dollar.

Around 30,000 people have attended this alluring celebration during the past four years (2014-2017), since its creation. “Our goal is to provide the Cuban audience with a wide range of music styles and forms of art from Cuba and all over the world”, explained HWM’s artistic manager Eme Alfonso.

Norway’s renowned rum brand Black Tears by Vigia is partnering with Havana World Music as its main sponsor. Together, they pilot this enriching multicultural experience that unites people from all over the world to share their art on the grounds of respect, passion and talent with no boundaries. Diversity, cross cultural dialogue and commitment with peace are the festival’s core values.
